Teaching Sustainability

As a teacher, I feel it is my responsibility to introduce and address sustainability in my classroom. I think it is necessary for individuals to have a sense of respect for themselves, for other people, and for our environment. We need to realize all our behaviours and actions are vitally connected to our community and our planet.

Harmony In Nature / Sustainability Unit

My kindergarten sustainability unit was a good example of this. By collaborating with two other kindergarten teachers and the music specialist, I found new ways of reaching all the diverse learning styles and abilities through a variety of approaches. The unit incorporated a nature walk, brainstorm sessions, interviews, visual arts activities, geometry, poetry, music, and dance (see images above).

The Earth Is Our Home

Through the lessons, the children learned all about the beauty and fragility of our planet. The unit culminated in a creative video called “The Earth Is Our Home” and it was shown at our school assembly. The video was a big hit and the kindergarten class received an enthusiastic applause. The positive school experience enriched the students’ confidence in their learning abilities. But most importantly, the video project brought all the kindergarten children closer together as a classroom community.
